Ingerid P. Kuiters
Graduated from Oslo State School of Arts in 1961 and studied art in Copenhagen, where she married the Dutch jazz musician Piet Kuiters (d. 2005) and had two children. She had her first exhibition in 1963 and has had more than 70 individual shows since. She has been commissioned to undertake numerous public art projects. Kuiters lives now in Aasgaardstrand, Norway. She has lived and worked in Amsterdam, New York and Montreal. She has visited Cuba, Morocco, Turkey, Pakistan, Greece and Egypt. Since 1990 she spends long periods in her studio in Tavira.
"Ingerid P. Kuiters is a rare specimen in Norwegian contemporary art... [Her art] has a distinctive folkloristic and popular character, but with clear references to contemporary art.
The distinctive feature is the use of wood as ground material. Worn wooden pieces of all kinds, old household equipment, remnants of furniture and boats, skis, and even drift timber, contribute to a certain rough charm. Another distinctive feature is the technical refinement, influenced by Japanese lacquer work, of polishing, grounding, incising and painting, finished with a lacquered surface.
Ingerid P. Kuiters works of art may be interpreted as storytelling. Symbols, figures and nature in beautiful combinations invoke humour, fantasy and imagination.
